Mushroom growing and temperature requirements

Related image

  • Different mushroom species require different temperature regimes both for the vegetative and fruiting phases.
  • This knowledge is essential to the farmer in choosing the type of mushrooms that will grow in his area.
  • Within the species, different strains show varied response to temperature.
  • Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus spp) can grow well generally between 5 and 30 °C.
  • Above 35 °C, the mycelium generally dies. Button mushrooms (Agaricus spp) generally grow well at temperatures between 5 and 22 °C.
  • The low temperature requirement for button mushrooms is one reason that makes them not very suitable for production by small-scale farmers.

“Of all mushrooms commonly consumed, oyster mushrooms stand out as exceptional allies for improving human and environmental health. These mushrooms enjoy a terrific reputation as the easiest to cultivate, richly nutritious and medicinally supportive.”
